□ Name:Fai D. Flourite
□ Journal: Behind_my_smile
□ Series: Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicles
□ Canon point: Just before leaving Nihon (Kurogane's home world) in the manga
□ History:
Fai's history is a tragic one. I should begin by saying, Fai is not this character's real name. In truth his name is Yuui. Fai is the name of his brother but he takes on his brother's name after his death as a reminder and a way to keep the memory of his brother fresh in his mind.
When he was very young, he lost both of his parents. His father died and then his mother committed suicide, ashamed at giving birth to him and his twin brother. The two of them were seen to be "Twins of Misfortune". When their magic powers were combined they were thought to be stronger then the king and it was believed that they would "curse" the world. His grandfather, the king, banished the two boys to a pit of despair where time didn't flow and magic was ineffective. He locked Yuui at the bottom of the pit and Fai at the top of a tall tower. They were to stay locked there until the destruction of the world. Every day more dead bodies filled the pit that the boys were locked into. Yuui tried to stack the bodies in order to reach the top of the tower and his brother but it was no use.
Eventually, the king became insane, and he executed everyone in the country. He then jumped into the valley himself and committed suicide in front of a horrified Yuui. The king said it was to remind them that their birth was the reason for the country's misfortune, and that they would now "pay for that sin" by being the only people alive.
Soon after, Fei Wong Reed came from another world to speak to Fai. He asked the boy to make a wish and Fai chose to save Yuui instead of himself. By making this choice, Fai was thrown from the tower to his death which Yuui once against witnessed with his own eyes. Fei Wong then tampered with Yuui's memory to make him think that Yuui had chosen to save himself at the cost of his brother's life, allowing Fei Wong to use his guilt in order to turn him into his servant.
Two curses were placed upon Yuui's body, one of which was erased from his memory until the day it would activate. Fei Wong then told Yuui that someone would free him from the valley, and that he would have to go on a journey where he would be protecting a princess.
King Ashura was the one that eventually came to retrieve Yuui and took him to a world called Celes. When Ashura asked what Yuui's name was, Yuui said "Fai". Ashura later gave Fai the last name "Flourite", and he earned the title 'D' after years of studying magic under Ashura. It is an honor given to the highest magician in Celes. This is how Yuue became known as "Fai D. Flourite".
Ashura taught Fai everything he knew about magic. Also because of the curse that was placed on Fai, Ashura traced a magical seal on Fai's body in the form of a Phoenix tattoo, which suppressed his powers from growing any further. The seal would break when the first of Fai's curses was activated. Fai's power is based in his blue eyes which becomes an important factor later in the series.
Several years later, a monster began to kill Celes's innocent civilians. Fai swore to defeat the beast, but found out that Ashura was actually the monster. That the more people he killed, the stronger he became. Fai realized that Ashura had brought him under his care for the sole purpose of killing him when he reached this state. Unable to bring himself to kill Ashura, Fai cast a spell on him, putting him into a deep sleep. However, no magic spell is permanent, so the king would eventually awaken. In order to avoid having to face Ashura when he woke, Fai used his magic to teleport himself to the Dimensional Witch known as Yuuko, where he begins his journey and meets the princess Sakura, just like Fei Wong foretold.
Fai masked many of his secrets behind a smile that became his signature feature. He also would be very vague about his past and told many lies throughout his time with the others. He constantly butted heads with the ninja from Nihon, Kurogane. Kurogane could see right through Fai's masks and lies and would constantly confront him about it. Fai would merely continue to avoid answering in order to do what he felt was protecting himself and the others from his misfortunes and curses.
Eventually more and more of his past and his abilities began to show themselves as the travelers gained more of Sakura's feathers (which were her memories and the reason they were traveling between worlds). In Tokyo, everything Fai had fought to keep secret threatened to become undone. It was revealed at this time that the Syaoran then had been traveling with was actually a clone. The Syaoran stole one of Fai's eyes and ate it, putting Fai's life in jeopardy as shock and the loss of half of his magical ability brought him close to death. Fai did not wish to have his life saved, feeling it would be better to die, but Kurogane didn't see it that way. Combining his blood with that of a vampire known as Kamui, they changed Fai into a vampire as well and saved his life. Unfortunately this forever linked his life with Kurogane's as the ninja would now have to become Fai's prey for food.
The fact that Kurogane saved him, bothered Fai because it meant that he had gotten too close to these travelers. He had tried to keep his distance but he had failed. His fears of hurting them resurfaced and he became cold and even more aloof then he had been before. Once they left Tokyo, the new world they arrived in would bring all of Fai's fears to the forefront. Upon receiving a feather in this world, Sakura's abilities suddenly became more powerful then Fai's..whose abilities were cut in half with the loss of his eye. Taking Kurogane's sword, he attacked and killed Sakura. Her soul and her body split, with the body being taken to Celes and the soul to a dream world. It was then that Fai learned that Ashura had awakened and Fai feared the man would come after him and the others. Fai tried to take his own life at this point but was once again stopped by Kurogane.
It was decided that the travelers would go to Celes in order to retrieve Sakura's body. Fai still had revealed little about his past at this point, or the reason why Ashura had been sealed away. With Yuuko's help they were transported to Celes where they confronted Ashura.
Must to Fai's dismay, his entire past was displayed to the group by Ashura. All the lies he had been telling were unraveled before his very eyes and even his brother's body was brought out on display. This caused Kurogane to unsheathe his sword and attack Ashura and Fai. Fai was horrified that his secrets had been revealed but despite that he decided to fight Kurogane with magic to protect Ashura, and also due to his vow not to die before he saved his brother. During the battle, Kurogane damaged the body of Fai's twin, and in that moment overpowered Fai. Since Ashura wanted Fai to kill him, he attacked Kurogane and the others to try and force Fai to fight. Upon injuring Kurogane, Fai attacked Ashura, retrieved Sakura's body, and placed her with Syaoran for protection. Fai then decided to kill Ashura for the sake of both their wishes, but Fai's lack of a will to live and the loss of his eye prevent him from fighting at full strength. Ashura overpowered him and Kurogane intercepted the attack and stabbed and killed Ashura.
Unfortunately this caused the 2nd of Fai's curses to activate. This curse said that if Fai didn't kill Ashura then all of Celes would be destroyed. The world was self destructing and Fai fully intended to stay with it. Kurogane had other idea's however and while Fai tried to use the last of his power to protect them, Kurogane sacrificed his arm in place of Fai and pulled the man to safety. The travelers left the world just as it saw its final seconds and ended up in Nihon, Kurogane's world.
This is the point I would be bringing Fai from. If more history is needed then I can continue to the end of the series. However, from this point on Fai would not be all that surprised to be pulled into a strange world. He is used to traveling and will believe this was an unscheduled stop. He will be pretty impatient to get back to Nihon when he realizes that this is not where he is supposed to be since he knows the final battle was close and that he needs to help the others and at this point is actually willing to fight by their side. However, Fai will interact with people like he would anyone else he encounters. With a smile and an attempt to talk his way out of every issue.
□ Personality:
Fai's personality does a complete 360 over the course of the manga. When you first meet him, he is happy, energetic and doesn't seem to have a care or worry in the world. A smile is almost constantly plastered on his face and he spends a great majority of his time teasing his other traveling companions, particularly Kurogane whom he gives a number of nicknames too. Fai's happy-go-lucky outer appearance is nothing but a mask that covers up a lot of secrets. The only one that truly sees through this mask over the course of the series, is Kurogane but he always finds a way of side-stepping any of Kurogane's questions or comments about himself. He tries to stay emotionally distant from everyone in the group, not wanting to get too close to them and run the risk of hurting them in the end. He carried a great emotional burden because of the loss of his twin brother, as well as the events that occurred on his home country of Celes with his king, Ashura. Because of the great losses he has felt over the course of his long lifetime, Fai doesn't care much for his own life and almost gives off the impression that he would prefer to die then to continue living. Because of this he is often seen fooling around during battles, with no regard to his own safety unless one of the other's becomes endangered. Then he fights at a level that is almost equal to that of Kurogane in order to protect them.
Upon reaching the world of Tokyo, that mask gets ripped away and the first of Fai's personality changes occurs. In a battle with one of the Syaoran's, Fai's eye gets removed and eaten. Since Fai's power resides in his blue eyes, this cuts his power in half and the shock of the trauma pushes him towards the brink of death. He didn't want to live, saying that if the clone Syaoran had his eye, then he would become too strong. But if Fai died then his magic would die as well. Unwilling to accept that, Kurogane combines his blood with the vampire Kamui and feeds it to Fai in order to save him. When Fai realizes what has happened, he tells Kurogane that he didn't want to live and upon recovering, regards him coldly and for the first time, calls him by his full name. This reveals the depth to which Fai resents being left alive and how his attempts to distance himself from the others had failed.
For the next few months and worlds, Fai distances himself from the group even more then before. He almost never smiles and instead is left with an almost lifeless and depressed expression. He is forced to feed from Kurogane now, the blood he consumed in Tokyo turning him into a vampire in order to save his life and since it was Kurogane's decision that Fai should live, then he had to bear the responsibility of it by becoming Fai's food source. His use of Kurogane's full name was in an effort to distance himself, saying that despite his efforts he had grown too close to the ninja over the course of his travels.
This coldness continues through the next few worlds until events force the travelers to go back to Fai's home world. As all of his lies and deception are ripped away, Fai is faced with nothing but truth for the first time in his life. At this point, he once again realizes just how close the others were to him as Kurogane makes an ultimate sacrifice to once again save Fai's life. All Fai wanted when he began the journey was to keep from getting close to anyone so that his "curse" wouldn't bring harm to anyone else. Many had died because of his and his brother's life and he desperately wanted that streak to end. However, it is clear that he has failed and he cares about these other travelers as much as they care about him. It is a stunning revelation to him and one that would finally make Fai act more true to himself.
This is where the next change occurred in Fai's personality. Kurogane's sacrifice had shown him just how important that the lives of his companions were to him and how much he wanted to continue to live alongside of them. His personality regained some of the happiness that it had when the manga had first begun. He smiles, this time much more honestly then he did before, and resumes calling Kurogane by nicknames. He does, however, punch Kurogane in the head for doing something he saw as stupid, thereby renewing their relationship and pushing it back to where it was before Fai became a vampire. Fai then sacrifices the rest of his magic to get Kurogane a new arm. Although still haunted by the visions of his past, Fai vows to live in the present and head towards a future, something he wouldn't ever consider before then. He now values his life much more and promises to never just throw it away or regard it as nothing.
Fai's relationship with Syaoran and Sakura is like that of a mother to her children. He often refers to them as the kids and does his best to look out for them whenever a difficult situation arises. He particularly cares for Sakura, who he takes under his wing while the "boys" go off and search for the feathers. This is seen throughout the series, particularly in the Virtual world where Fai and Sakura are left to run the "Cat's Eye" cafe while Syaoran and Kurogane go off to train or fight with the monsters. He tried to teach her many things while they were on their own so that she could impress Syaoran upon his return each day. In a way this was also his version of teasing, since he enjoyed seeing how embarrassed and please Syaoran would get whenever Sakura did things for him.
Even despite looking out for the kids, Fai still kept them at an arm's length. He didn't want them to get close and find out the many secrets he had and the way he had manipulated things in the beginning of their journey. Eventually though, they also managed to find their way into his heart and he realized that he wouldn't be able to separate himself from them any longer. He felt great remorse for stabbing Sakura in the infinity world even though it was beyond his control. He was so distraught that he almost killed himself a second later because of it but Kurogane stopped him just in time. It took several worlds for Fai to finally accept his actions and it wasn't until he made the vow to not throw his life away that he then decided that he would do whatever he could to make sure Sakura and Syaoran were able to be together and happy.
□ Age: Actual age is estimated to be in the hundreds but it is never said in canon
□ Gender:Male
□ Appearance:
Fai is long and lanky. He's got incredibly long legs and a very short upper body that make him appear even taller then he actually is. He is still very tall, standing in the roughly 5'11" range. He has long blond hair that is constantly pulled back into a pony tail by a dark ribbon. One eye is a golden color while the other is missing and covered up by a black eyepatch.
□ Abilities/Powers:
Fai's strengths are much different now that he is a vampire. All of his original magic power is gone. Instead his has quickened reflexes and moves much faster then a typical human. He also has the ability to extend out his fingernails into sharp talons that he can use for close combat fighting. When he activates this vampire ability his golden eye changes its appearance, taking on a catlike appearance with a black slit up the middle of his eye. Fai was always a pretty nimble fighter, though he much preferred to avoid the fighting when he could. The vampire blood that runs through his veins also helps him to regenerate and heal much faster then he used to be able to, and far quicker then a human.
His weaknesses are the fact that he is blind in one eye and keeps it covered by an eyepatch, which does affect his vision slightly. He has none of his magic left but he can still sense magic when it is being used nearby. He also depends on Kurogane's blood for living so when he goes without feeding for any amount of time it can cause his energy to be drained.
□ Personal Items:
Fai doesn't really have anything besides the clothes on his back. Most of the things they have collected on other worlds gets kept with Mokona but even then he doesn't really have any personal items.
□ First Person Sample:
[There is an image of a smiling face staring into a mirror. The expression doesn't show a hint of his actual confused feelings.]
Ah, hello everyone who can see this! Which might be everyone on this world..wouldn't that be interesting? Well then..hello world! There! That way I am covered and don't forget anyone!
It seems I've arrived in a strange place and I am missing a few of the people I should have arrived with..and by a few I mean, all of them. That is a terrible predicament to be in, don't you think?
So if you have seen a tall, grumpy, dark haired ninja walking around with a shorter brown haired boy, and a white fluffy animal thing..they are missing and I really need them to be returned. Please let me know. I'm sure they just wandered off and got lost. Shame on them~
[It doesn't really matter if Fai is the one that wondered off..that's besides the point! What is important is finding them.]
I've been told a little about this world and everything seems a bit fantastical. Then again, most worlds are if you are new to them. The rules of this world are a bit..surprising. Never mind that though! Information on my missing friends is what is truly important at this moment.
[Because he really doesn't want to think about the whole sex thing quite yet. That means getting a little too close to people. He has enough trouble doing that to people he knows.]
□ Third Person Sample:
Fai walked down the steps of the reeducation building with his hands behind his head and a rather relaxed posture for someone who was told he was going to have to have sex in order to move up in the world. Having woken up in an unusual bedroom was really not that strange to him, but waking up without his normal traveling companions did strike him as a little odd, as did the requirements of the world. He was used to moving from world to world but never before had he heard rules quite like that. They made him uncomfortable and it took a lot to unsettle this particular vampire. But he simply smiled and nodded his head as things were explained to him, wanting nothing more then to run from the building and find his traveling companions.
As he reached the street he brought one hand forward to call out their names, hoping that perhaps they were within earshot of the building if they had just arrived there with him. "Kuro-rin? Syaoran?" Even Mokona seemed to be missing and usually the small white creature was not far from his side. For a moment, Fai wondered if perhaps something had happened as they were transferring worlds. It wouldn't be the first time their group had gotten split up. It would be the first time he was left on his own when it happened though.
He placed his hands on his hips as he let his one golden eye wander and take in the scenery. They certainly had found themselves in a bizarre world this time. He wondered just what it was going to take to locate the others. If nothing else he could usually sense Kurogane, many thanks to the bond of blood that they now shared. However, even the familiar presence of the ninja seemed to be lacking. There was a hint of worry that pinged deep inside of him but he tried not to get too worked up yet. "It's not nice to start playing hide and seek without telling me first!"
Deciding it was time to continue his search, figuring they were probably doing the same, he placed his hands behind his head again. He didn't sense any magic from the world itself, or at least none that he had ever felt before, however he could feel there was power in some of the people wandering the streets. "It's not like Kuro-tan to play games. This isn't quite the Clow Country that I had envisioned either. I wonder if something went wrong while we were traveling. Nothing felt different.."
Now Fai was starting to worry a bit. Not letting it show quite yet though, he placed that energetic smile on his face that was his norm and called out once again, "Excuse me~? I appear to be lost? Is anyone around? I could use some help! It would be greatly appreciated!" Fai wasn't sure if he was really yelling to anyone at all, but he figured if he kept hunting he would run into someone eventually. And if he kept talking, someone might hear him and come to him. He knew that it wasn't time to get worried yet. He just had to keep on walking and eventually something was bound to happen! Of course..he wasn't sure if it would be something good or bad..but he tried not to dwell on the specifics too much.

Because of this he is often seen fooling around during battles, with no regard to his own safety unless one of the other's becomes endangered.
